Brie Larson stars in Marvel Studios’ first female-led American superhero film Captain Marvel, the 21st title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Based on the Marvel Comics character Carol Danvers, the movie also stars Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, among others.
Set in the mid-’1990s, the movie draws inspiration from Roy Thomas’ comic book series Kree-Skrull War, created in 1971.
The directorial collaboration between Massachusetts’ Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from California helps create the right kind of visual treat and cinematic magic for Captain Marvel, with a compelling screenplay from Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Larson’s avatar as Danvers follows her story as she goes on to become Captain Marvel when the Earth is caught between a galactic war between two alien races. Larson was announced as Danvers during the San Diego Comic-Con in 2016, with directors Boden and Fleck joining the following year. Jackson (who played Fury in the MCU films Iron Man, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Clark Gregg (as agent Phil Coulson) both return in their established roles.
Legend was honored to provide 3D conversion services on the film. “It was a blast to bring back the 90's and taking the audience to L.A., internet cafes, and alien battles,” said Simon Kern, Legend Creative Director. “My favorite scene - the fight sequence on Torfa - great fun to convert to 3D. The fight looked even more intense and dangerous in 3D when we broke out all of the CG elements like laser beams, dust, debris, and flying enemies.”
The Legend team faced an interesting challenge during the process. “We had tons of matching shots to convert, Kern explained. “It was a challenge to keep track of all of them and make sure that each shot still matched after doing any stereoscopic changes to one. Our excellent communication between the Legend Pune and L.A. teams and the focus of our leads and artists was key to overcoming this situation.
What also helped was a true collaboration with Marvel Studios executives. “We have worked with Marvel on so many projects that our team fully understood client expectations. That experience, and the fact that Marvel is always so supportive, helped us to finish this project smoothly without missing any deadlines,” added Kern.
Captain Marvel, released by Disney’s Buena Vista Distribution, premiered Friday, March 8, 2019.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World™.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided Wizarding World.

Alpha is a 2018 American epic historical adventure film set in the last Ice Age film, directed by Albert Hughes and written by Daniele Sebastian Wiedenhaupt, from a story by Hughes. The film stars Kodi Smit-McPhee as a young hunter who befriends an injured wolf, with Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as his father.
Alpha tells a fascinating, visually stunning story that shines a light on the origins of man’s best friend. While on his first hunt with his tribe’s most elite group, a young man is injured and must learn to survive alone in the wilderness. Reluctantly taming a lone wolf abandoned by its pack, the pair learn to rely on each other and become unlikely allies, enduring countless dangers and overwhelming odds in order to find their way home before winter arrives.
“The 3D on the film is magnificent,” said Louise Rosner, President, Production for Studio 8. “Your team has done a fantastic job on Alpha.”
Alpha is a Studio 8 and Columbia Pictures Production, distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing.
Jason Statham (Spy, Furious 7, The Expendables films) and award-winning Chinese actress Li Bingbing (Transformers: Age of Extinction, Forbidden Kingdom, The Message) star in the science fiction action thriller directed by Jon Turteltaub (the National Treasure movies, Last Vegas).
Turteltaub directed the film from a screenplay by Dean Georgaris and Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber, based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Steve Alten. Lorenzo di Bonaventura (the Transformers films), Belle Avery (Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead) and Colin Wilson (Suicide Squad, Avatar) produced the film, with Gerald R. Molen, Randy Greenberg, Wayne Wei Jiang, and Barrie Osborne serving as executive producers.
“Honestly, the most impressive thing for me about this movie was the 3D conversion,” Turtletaub enthusiastically proclaimed about the artistry that Legend 3D created for his team. “I was a doubter. I’m so sold. What you guys did just blew me away in surprising ways. I couldn’t believe the amount of work it took…it’s so much and, wow…it was awesome. Well done! Thank you, Legend”
In the film, a deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific… with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon.
Filming on The Meg was accomplished on location in China and New Zealand. The Meg is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Gravity Pictures. It is production of di Bonaventura Pictures, Apelles Entertainment, Maeday Productions, Inc., and Flagship Entertainment, in association with Beijing Digital Impression (BDI) Film, Inc.
The film has enjoyed phenomenal success, earning over half a billion dollars at the global box office since its release on August 10, 2018.
Ant-Man and The Wasp marks Legend's sixth time working closely with the Marvel team to provide stereo conversion services for a feature film. Following the events of Captain America: Civil War, Scott Lang deals with the resulting consequences of his choices as both a superhero and as a father. As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, Scott is approached by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission that requires him to don his suit and fight alongside The Wasp. The urgent mission soon leads to secret revelations from the past as the dynamic duo finds itself in an epic battle against a powerful new enemy.
Working closely with Marvel’s Stereo Supervisor Gary Carillo, Legend added dimension to a world that constantly and unexpectedly changes in scale and perspective. “The most challenging and fun sequence we had was the fight between The Wasp and Sonny’s crew in the kitchen.” says Legend Stereo Supervisor Prateek Kaushal. He continued, “As she grew and shrank, we focused on keeping everything relative to The Wasp’s scale, exaggerating when we really wanted to play up the 3D effect. We emphasized this effect at key moments, such as when The Wasp shrinks to dodge an attack and then runs on a butcher knife to take out a thug. We also had a fun time working with Ghost’s phasing effects.”
Directed by Peyton Reed, the director of the original Ant-Man, this sequel features Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne/The Wasp and Michael Douglas as Dr. Pym. Simon Kern, Legend’s lead Stereo Supervisor on this project remarks on how the availability of production assets allowed Legend’s team to create better, more fantastic 3D imagery. “Marvel has a great relationship with their VFX vendors. This allows us to utilize the elements and zdepth passes to get the most out of the CG assets, such as Ant-Man and The Wasp’s wings. We also benefitted with early VFX finals – this extra time allowed us to take our work to the next level.”
Prateek also comments, “Our team of artists did an excellent job sculpting the faces of characters. Many of our shots were intimate moments between Scott and Cassie that consisted of long, close up takes. The artists put extreme detail into the characters and kept them consistent throughout the sequences.”
Ant-Man and The Wasp premiered on July 6, 2018 in the U.S. and Canada.

These mysterious astral travelers have journeyed to Earth to help Meg and Charles search for their father, and together they set off on their formidable quest. Traveling via a wrinkling of time and space known as tessering, they group travel to worlds beyond their wildest imagination where they must confront a powerful evil. To make it back home to Earth, Meg must look deep within herself to harness the strength necessary to defeat the darkness closing in on them.
A Wrinkle in Time was directed by Ava DuVernay, and is a modern spin on the classic tale by Madeleine L’Engle’s beloved 1962 novel. A Wrinkle in Time features talented newcomers Storm Reid and Levi Miller alongside Hollywood’s elite including Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Mindy Kaling and others. DuVernay says she was initially unsure of 3D, but that “after I saw the work performed by Legend, I’m convinced about the effectiveness of 3D - there are sequences of this film that feel so much more expansive, of interest and fantastic in 3D. It was fascinating for me to learn something new about all the tools and possibilities for what we can make beautiful in film!”
“Working with Team Disney on A Wrinkle in Time was and always is a very collaborative team effort. As our client they demand only the best results and as a matter of principle we strive to deliver our absolute best work. It’s a great place to be, when all people involved are giving it their all to produce a beautiful stereoscopic experience.” says Tony Baldridge, Legend’s Stereo Supervisor. He goes on to remark on the artists’ dedication to the project, “Each artist involved in a big show like this has to apply everything they’ve learned up to that moment: every skill, technique and technical expertise. Then use this to produce grade A results over and over for each shot. It takes an incredible amount of determination from every team member. It’s the only way these films are completed with the quality Legend is known for and we commend them wholeheartedly.”
A Wrinkle in Time premiered on March 9th, 2018 in the U.S. and Canada.

Following the events of Captain America: Civil War and the death of his father, King T'Challa returns home to the kingdom of Wakanda, a technologically advanced nation in Africa. As the newly instituted leader, T'Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When a powerful enemy suddenly reappears, T'Challa's mettle as king and as Black Panther is tested. Faced with treachery, danger, and a threat to Wakanda itself, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.
Directed by Ryan Coogler, Black Panther features talented stars new and old including Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira.
As the 18th film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther marks Legend's fifth time working closely with the Marvel team to provide stereo conversion services for a feature film. Working with Marvel’s Stereo Supervisor Gary Carrillo, Legend created a fantastic, fun world in the third dimension. “Black Panther started big right out of the gate. After Legend’s work on the trailer, Marvel’s Gary Carrillo took Legend’s creative team through each sequence and set the tone for the film.” Says Legend Stereo Supervisor Simon Kern. “From a museum surrounded by layers of glass and reflections, to a room on a mountain top filled with logs and ropes, Legend pushed forward on our collaboration with the Marvel team.”
Simon continues with his favorite scene to convert, “We had the opportunity to bring to life the intimate scene between Killmonger and his father, N’Jobu, during Killmonger’s Astral Dream. Coogler’s use of long takes allowed Legend to hone in the stereo, giving the audience a very detailed and emotional scene.” Prateek Kaushal, Legend’s Stereo Supervisor based in Pune, India says, “The basketball and ambulance shots were quite complex involving layers of glass, objects and reflections and were very long takes. We had our best artists assigned to these sequences and our leads did a fantastic job planning and dividing these to ensure it was our highest quality work while meeting deadlines.”
Black Panther was a global effort and was completed with assistance from our teams in the LA, Toronto and Pune studios. Prateek Kaushal continues with pride for the Legend teams’ work, “Our leads did a great job training artists who worked on Black Panther to ensure they were aware of Marvel’s expectations without slowing down production work. All around, every single person working on this project acted as a great team player and put forth their best effort to make this one of our best Marvel movies yet!” Legend Producer Mike Anders says, “I’ve had the opportunity to work on several Marvel films, but this one has by far been my favorite. I’m very proud to have been a part of a film that is so culturally significant and will resonate with audiences in an unprecedented way.”
Black Panther premiered on February 16th, 2018 in the U.S. and Canada.

Thor: Ragnarok is the 17th film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the follow-up to 2011’s Thor and 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. In this third installment of the franchise, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard in order to prevent the impending Ragnarok - the destruction of his home world and the end of Asgardian civilization - at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger, The Incredible Hulk!
Thor: Ragnarok features an all-star cast including Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins.
Thor: Ragnarok marks Legend's fourth time working closely with the Marvel team to provide stereo conversion services for a feature film. With Evan Jacobs at the helm, Legend was guided through the depths of space and back. Our goal in converting this feature into Stereoscopic 3D was to make it fun, big, and live up to the expectations of the God of Thunder.
“One of the most rewarding sequences to see come together was Valkyrie's reveal.” said Simon Kern, Stereoscopic Supervisor at Legend. “It was a particularly fun, yet challenging scene. We needed to make the world feel huge, detail out the miles of trash, and compress the far background to reduce miniaturization. Once her ship lands, we expanded the overall 3D as we zoom in on the ship, making her reveal very intimate.”
“Legend’s artists came together to provide stereo conversion for one of our deepest shows to date,” said Kyle Bundgaard, Stereo Supervisor at Legend. “Junkyards, spaceships, aliens, gods and Stan Lee were no match to keep the team from Ragnarokin’ and Rollin’ on our way to completing our second Marvel show this year. It was the hard work and dedication of the artists that resulted in a truly wonderful 3D experience.”
Thor: Ragnarok premiered on November 3rd, 2017 in the U.S. and Canada.

Michael Jackson’s iconic music video for Thriller premiered in 1983 and sold out every night for three weeks, and is the only music film to be inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Following a restoration of the original film’s audio and video, Legend 3D worked with Michael Jackson’s Estate and the original director John Landis to convert this popular video into 3D.
“Working with the Stereographers at Legend 3D was fun and exciting,” said Director John Landis. “I was impressed with their enthusiasm and skill, and how far the technology has come. I think people will be wowed by their work in Michael Jackson's Thriller 3-D.”
Landis also says, “We took full advantage of the remarkable advances in technology to add new dimensions to both the visual and the audio, bringing it to a whole new level. Even though Thriller was shot traditionally, I was able to use the 3-D creatively. Let me just warn you, there is a rather shocking surprise in there.”
“I couldn’t be more proud of Legend3D’s talented artists for the incredible work they did on Michael Jackson’s Thriller 3D,” said Legend 3D’s Managing Stereo Supervisor Tony Baldridge. “And working directly with John Landis was an honor and a rare privilege. He’s a quintessential storyteller and wants to understand the tools of the trade. To that end we had a blast talking through each shot and what his original 2D intent was, and how it could translate to 3D, then leveraging Legend’s powerful toolset to execute his creative direction right then and there. It doesn’t get much better.”
Highly anticipated since rumors arose in 2014, the 3D film premieres at the 2017 Venice Film Festival in Italy on September 4th, and will screen at the Toronto Film Festival later that month.
